In January 2018, CIO Chris Kielt named Michael Barker as Chief Technology Officer. Barker assumed the CTO duties in addition to his role as Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Computing and Teaching & Learning. The role of the CTO is ensure that ITS implements common technology frameworks that share coherent adoption criteria before move forward and expose new technology on campus.

In June 2018, John Mack joined ITS as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Infrastructure & Operations. Mack brings a wealth of experience and talent to his role at UNC-Chapel Hill. While at the University of Michigan, Mack was the Assistant Director for Communications Systems and Data Center Operations and a member of the team leading Michigan’s ServiceNow implementation. Prior to his time in Ann Arbor, Mack directed Change Management and Operations at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Before starting his higher education career, Mack ran national and global data center operations for the Garmin Corp., and before that was the Senior Director for Strategy Management and Engineering at MemberWorks Inc.

Mack succeeds Dennis Schmidt, who in May 2018 took on the new role of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Information Security, Privacy and Identity Management. In this new role, Schmidt also assumed the role of Chief Information Security Officer.

Also, in June 2018, Kate Hash assumed the role of Chief of Staff and Director of Communications, having previously served as the Manager of Communications and Digital Services. In this new role, Hash maintains her oversight of Digital Services and Communications, and adds Policy and Governance to her portfolio.
